Shoot
This work is a tribute to some of the greatest storytellers ever…professional wrestlers! A fan of the art form since I was a young boy, Shoot is a story as old as time: a young man trying to do an honorable deed is preyed upon by an unscrupulous charlatan, trying to make a name for himself. I love the play’s description: “There’s always an angle and everyone’s part heel in a world where only the cunning can survive”.
I was so fortunate to have Shoot presented at Scripts on Tap, a play reading series, at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, CT. Based on the feedback, I hope to expand this piece into a full-length play in the near future.
Excerpt from Shoot: Scene 1:
ROUGHNECK
Did you see that, Russell?!? This interloper comes into our house, without so much as wiping his feet and treats your TV champion with utter disdain! Disdain, I say! I demand retribution. I demand…
(Interrupting. Trey points his finger at Roughneck and ultimately at the title.)
TREY
You don’t have to demand anything, you old goat! I’ll proudly walk the aisle that my daddy did, and like my father, I’ll whip your ass…and I’ll take that Bluegrass TV Title with me!
(Vance turning back to the camera.)
VANCE
Well, folks, there you have it! A match for the ages, the son of BCW legend Dewey Stone, Striking Steve Stone, will challenge the current champ, Terry “Roughneck” Beard for the TV title this Saturday night, at 7PM at the Bluegrass Armory. One man fighting for retribution against another man defending his family’s honor. Who will triumph? Come to the Armory this Saturday night to find out!
MIKEY
Three…two…one…and we’re clear. Great job! Especially you, new guy!
(Roughneck reacts jealously to Mikey’s praise for Trey, still holding his face.)
ROUGHNECK
That slap was a little stiff.
TREY
So was your comment about my mother…maybe a little too close to home.
